What newly hired employees right out of university asked me for.

I spent four days training a group of newly graduated students hired by a hedge fund on leadership communication skills.

There were models, structures, exercises, and practices throughout the learning. It was a robust group who were well aware that they needed to learn how to communicate effectively to be successful in their roles.

What was interesting at the very end of the training, they hesitated to leave the room. I asked, “Was there something else you need?” “Yes”, we need more. Can we continue to meet with you?”

We began coaching once a week for a period of time.  Here is what the newcomers asked to work on was:

  • How do we know how to behave on the desk, in the office?
  • How do we navigate the hierarchy and politics of our team and the firm?
  • How do we fit it?
  • How to we avoid any faux pas?”

This was falling into that unknown territory for them. By bringing in their live situations, we would talk about how they might find their footing. It felt crucial that they manage their critical day-to-day relationships in the office. They seemed terrified to make a wrong move.

As I had already coached some of their senior team members, I was quite familiar with the “personality” of the place.

They wanted to have more control over their situation, therefore we were on the mat wrestling with their real lived concerns.  Here we got to put the models, structures, and knowledge into practice. Very engaging.
