Growing up in NJ in the NYC suburbs, my friends and I, we had two educations. We had school and we had our hunter-gatherer education. We played in mixed-age neighborhood groups every day after school, often until way after dark. We played all weekend and all summer long. We had time to explore in all sorts of ways, and time to  figure out how to overcome boredom, time to get into trouble and find our way out of it, time to daydream, time to immerse ourselves in hobbies, and time to read comics and whatever else we wanted to read rather than the books assigned to us. It was heavenly.

What I learned in my hunter-gatherer education has been far more valuable to my adult life than what I learned in school.

I learned the values of fairness, team, community, creativity, imagination and collaboration and these are are ever solid in my make up and core.

Today, Play is missing in many childhoods.  Play provides necessary skills of  cooperation that cannot be taught from books. That’s where Improvisation comes in. This time-tested approach, based on the structure of games, allows you to absorb skills naturally without conscious effort.

Let’s face it – you may have your business tool kit of experience, strategy, a solid education, and well-laid plans. Yet, sooner or later, you begin to realize that the act of management requires advanced improvisational skills.  This is where your experience and training may fall short.

Improvisation games are play designed to stimulate action, relationship, spontaneity and creativity in a group setting. It’s learning by doing through first-hand experience – rather than by lecture with data delivery.
This play oriented approach – which started as a whole new branch of the American Theatre – is now adapted to the needs of leaders and emerging leaders and the specific issues they face in their businesses.

In it, we explore how to stay in the moment, think on your feet and rely on your personal resources while using the activities of improvisation.
